Your Profile: The Good Skier Who Lost Confidence

Does this sound familiar?

You know you can ski.

Other people probably know it too.

And that's partly what makes losing confidence so frustrating.

You may have years of skiing behind you and plenty of technical ability, yet find yourself hesitating in situations you once wouldn't have thought twice about.

Perhaps certain slopes, conditions or experiences now trigger doubt. You might start analysing your technique, questioning decisions you used to make instinctively, or wondering why you can't simply ski the way you know you're capable of skiing.

Sometimes there's an obvious reason; a fall, an injury, a frightening experience or a difficult period in life.

Sometimes there isn't.

Confidence can change gradually, and when it does, it's very easy to assume that something has gone wrong with your skiing.

But ability and confidence aren't the same thing.

You can have the technical skills to ski something and still not trust yourself enough to use them freely.

And the harder you try to think your way back to the skier you used to be, the more disconnected from your natural skiing you can sometimes feel.

You might recognise some of these...

| Knowing you're capable of skiing something but hesitating anyway.

| Overthinking technique that used to feel instinctive.

| Feeling frustrated because your confidence doesn't match your ability.

| Avoiding particular terrain or conditions even though you've skied them successfully before.

| Comparing how you ski now with how you think you should be skiing.

What can help

Understanding what changed

Loss of confidence isn't always about skiing itself. Identifying what has shifted, and what your mind has learned from it, can be an important first step.

‍ ‍

Rebuilding self-trust

The aim isn't to force yourself to be the skier you once were. It's to develop trust in the skier you are now.

Moving out of overthinking and back towards instinct

Mindset tools can help reduce the mental noise that gets between you and skills that are already there.
