When Motivation Disappears (And Why That’s Okay)

Girl with head on laptop whilst at work, feeling unmotivated.

You know that feeling when life throws a lot at you all at once, and your body just... gives up before you do? Yep, that’s me right now.

We recently made a big move. The kind that involves cardboard boxes, endless checklists, and a level of exhaustion I’m not sure even the strongest coffee could fix.

Motivation? Honestly, it packed its bags and moved out somewhere around the same time I did.

And if I’m being really honest (because that's what I’m here for), I’m giving myself a hard time about it. That voice in my head - the one that thinks I should just "bounce back," "get over it," "be grateful and just get on with it" - has been louder than I’d like lately.

So, this blog isn’t about having it all figured out.

It’s a reminder, for you and for me, that this is a work in progress.

Big Life Changes = Big Energy Costs

Moving house might not seem like much compared to, say, climbing Everest... but emotionally and physically, it takes a lot.

Change, even when it’s positive, is exhausting. It asks your brain to rewire, your emotions to recalibrate, and your body to adjust to all the newness.

And sometimes, that leaves very little room for anything else - like big ideas, big goals, or even getting through your emails without wanting to throw your laptop out the window.

Motivation Isn't a Constant State (No Matter What Instagram Says)

We live in a world that worships motivation.

Hustle culture, positive quotes, endless “you’ve got this!” memes - it’s everywhere.

But the truth?

Motivation is like the weather. Some days it's bright and energising. Other days it’s grey and a bit meh. And that’s completely normal.

You’re not broken because you don’t feel like showing up 100% all the time.

You’re human.

What I'm Reminding Myself Right Now

🧡 Rest is not weakness.

It’s part of the cycle. You can’t pour from an empty cup (or, in my case, an empty moving box).

🧡 Small wins still count.

Maybe the big, ambitious plans are on hold this week. But answering that one email? Going for a short walk? Drinking some water? Those things matter too.

🧡 Self-kindness is the secret weapon.

Honestly, this is the hardest part for me. But I know that beating myself up isn’t going to make me feel better faster. Gentleness > guilt, every time.

🧡 This feeling isn’t forever.

Energy, inspiration, and motivation will come back - in their own time, not on my timeline.

If You’re Feeling It Too...

If you’re also in a season where motivation feels missing in action, please know this:

You’re not lazy.

You’re not failing.

You’re not falling behind.

You’re simply living.

Adjusting.

Processing.

Resting.

Recovering.

And that’s not just okay - it’s necessary.

Final Thought

So no, I’m not firing on all cylinders right now.

And yes, I’m still learning (daily!) how to be a little kinder to myself through it.

If you’re in the same boat, maybe we can paddle it together - slowly, steadily, without rushing to get anywhere.

The truth is, even in the pause, you’re still moving forward.

Sometimes the bravest thing you can do... is let yourself breathe.
